How to find the name of the (host) galaxy, in an image?

  • JeanTate by JeanTate

A13_23_ recently asked, in the Bug Reports Here thread, "How can I know the name of the galaxy in the image?"

I think it's a really good question! 😃 But it'll get lost in that thread 😦, so I started this one.

    Anyone?

I'm not sure if you refer this:

    1. In Talk Galaxy zoo: radio, press link SDSS under the subject.
    2. In the SDSS navigation screen, click on the galaxy and press "explore" in the right panel.
    3. In this new screen you can see the SDSS number and ID, if you click in "Look up common name" you will see the name of the object in other catalogs.
    4. In the same screen in the left panel you can click in NED, SIMBAD, or ADS search to see more references about the object.

NED is the NASA Extragalactic Database (https://ned.ipac.caltech.edu/)
