What is it?

  • carolm by carolm

This looks interesting to my untutored eye. Am I right in thinking that it is a massive super massive black hole that is pulling in a number of the galaxies around it.? If I'm wrong then what is it?

    Hi @carolm,

what you are looking here at is a fantastic set of two jets of this elliptical galaxy: http://skyserver.sdss3.org/public/en/tools/chart/navi.aspx?ra=240.88379166666667&dec=17.199166666666667&scale=0.4

Based on NVSS and FIRST I don't think this is overedge source, probably #plume (although in literature classified as head-tail and wat, guessing our science team member Heinz can tell us more about this source!), so you really look here at the jets, not so much at the lobes in the most common sense. This is a very nearby galaxy, only at z=0.034 (NGC 6034) and it's in a cluster of galaxies (A2151).

Having said that, the jets don't really pull other galaxies around. You will see many other galaxies here because it just a fairly crowded region.
