Strings of IR sources

  • andymarrison by andymarrison

Hello! I'm pretty new to all this so sorry if this is either a silly question or in the wrong place, or both!

The image ARG0000xg5 appears to have two clear radio lobes, but running close to the lobes are two faint "strings" of fairly faint IR sources. Does that mean anything?

    Hi @andymarrison,
Welcome to RGZ! The "string of IR sources" that you're seeing to the left of the radio source on the left are in fact a few background galaxies seen in projection. Does this help?

    cheers,
    Ivy

Thanks Ivy - how do we know they are in projection (i.e. A lot further away?) and not just faint and at a similar distance? Is that based on distance data from elsewhere, or is it apparent from the image itself? guess really this comes down to a different question - is it possible to get clues from the images as to their "depth"? Thanks very much, Andy.
