A very bright star.
If you look at a diagram of the SDSS system, you'll see that there are lots of places where optical artifacts can arise ... the 'spider' (the thin vanes which support the secondary mirror; these create the 'spikes'), various parts of the camera, etc. Also, the automatic pipeline which analyzes the data from the camera is 'dumb', and does its best to set the level of the background ('sky'); however, near bright stars it doesn't succeed very well, hence the 'tiling' ...
