What do fading lobes look like? Lobes which are just starting to form?

  • JeanTate by JeanTate

I've been reading the RGZ paper which reports the finding - by Dolorous_Edd and antikodon! - of a giant WAT; details, including links, in this RGZ Talk Discussion.

The paper discusses, among other things, how old this WAT might be, and whether it's restarted.

That got me wondering: when the jets from an AGN get started, what do they look like, in a typical FIRST field? When the lobes - at the ends of the jets - begin to form, what do they look like? After the jets shut down, the lobes will begin to fade; what do fading lobes look like?

A "for example" image: ARG00004lm (click on the link to see the ARG field):

My guess would be that this is a "new" source; the core is bright, there are two jets (or I think they're jets!), and only the hint of a lobe (SW). Am I right?

    In ARG00002cf is a good example - I think! - of a pair of fading lobes (it's also in ARG00002ca and ARG00002cj):
