triple with lobes with multiple hotspots

  Is the appearance of multiple hotspots in a plume like this a sign of multiple eruptions (or variations in the intensity of one eruption) or are they just regions of different density in the plume? Each hotspot in the south seems to have an opposing feature above, although not always so compact, which suggests they are related.
