What is a journal club?

  • 42jkb by 42jkb scientist, admin

A journal club is where scientists gather to discussion new and interesting scientific publications. In astronomy, the pre-print server (arXiv) makes a new list every weekday of the latest articles being published. This is where we usually start unless something has come up in the news.

Journal clubs usually happen once a week and the person who presents changes each week. We present an article that we find interesting, going over the main points, and then we discuss the science, method, and data.

I suggest for the RGZ journal club to highlight articles that can relate to the science goals and found objects in RGZ. The article Kyle placed on "Bent-Tailed Radio Sources" was a great initial article as it discussed some of the weird and wonky morphologies of radio sources.

There is no set plan for a journal club. Just post something here that you have found intriguing that may (or may not) relate to RGZ. Hopefully we can start a discussion and everyone gets to learn something new!

    Question: Why just RGZ?

@Peter Dzwig: Most of the scientists here are radio/galaxy/AGN experts so we will be in a better position to help with the discussions than if we got a paper from another field (eg about planetary formation etc)
