"INTERNET RESOURCES FOR RADIO ASTRONOMY" - an old(ish) paper, but *very* good

  • JeanTate by JeanTate

A fellow zooite pointed me to it, on NED: "INTERNET RESOURCES FOR RADIO ASTRONOMY", by none other than Heinz Andernach! 😄 It's also available from arXiv, astro-ph/9807346

One overwhelming impression I get: it takes a very long time to go from 'excellent plan' to 'good survey results'; ~six years' ago several big projects, under consideration for quite a while, have only recently come online (e.g. ATCA), and some are still quite a ways off (e.g. SKA). An interesting 'not mentioned' facility: LOFAR. Of course, long lead times are not unknown in optical astronomy too ... for example, SDSS took forever, and almost died several times.

In my efforts to find candidate 'doublelobes associated with spirals' I've come across what seem like mis-matched identifications, or perhaps mis-alignments, of sources and names (e.g. B3 1701+423 (z_sp 0.476) and SDSS J170256.86+421731.7 (z_ph 0.44) - ARG0001182/ARG000117l - giant with odd-looking host). I don't know how common these are, but perhaps data from this RGZ project will be useful in this regard?

Yeah, the time it takes to develop new instrumentation that enable these new surveys are non-trivial.
